Stone Town day trip from Paje — carved wooden doors and coral-stone alleys
— Journal · Island tours

Stone Town,
a whole coast in one old town.

A UNESCO maze of Swahili, Arab, Indian and European Zanzibar. What to see in a single day from the east coast — and what to skip.

Stone Town is the old heart of Zanzibar City, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the last living Swahili coastal towns. It is a warren of coral-stone houses, carved doors and alleys too narrow for cars, built where Africa, Arabia, India and Europe met and traded for centuries. From Paje it is an easy day out — and a day is enough to feel it.

What to see in a day

Fans of music often add the modest house linked to Freddie Mercury, who was born in Zanzibar; it is a photo more than a museum.

How to do it from Paje

Stone Town is roughly an hour by road from the east coast. The efficient version is a morning drive over, a guided walk through the old town (the alleys genuinely confuse first-timers — a guide is worth it here), lunch, free time, and Forodhani at dusk before the drive back. Pairing it with the spice farm, which is on the same side of the island, makes a full and satisfying day.

One honest note

Stone Town is a real, lived-in city, not a museum village. It is dense, a little chaotic, and warm in every sense. Dress modestly away from the seafront (shoulders and knees), agree prices before you take anything, and let the alleys pull you around — getting mildly lost is the point.

In short: One day is enough; go with a guide for the old town and stay for Forodhani at dusk. We arrange Stone Town — often with the spice farm on the same run — as part of your plan. See experiences and pricing →
