Zanzibar is good for a honeymoon if you choose the month and the coast with care and know the rules: come between the two rainy seasons, know that on the east coast the tide decides when the sea is at your door, and remember that this is a conservative island, where modesty in public matters. Our own tide table for Paje puts the lowest daytime water between November 2026 and March 2027 on the 22nd and 23rd of February, and has Valentine's Day on a softer tide, just before the neaps.
We run a small hotel on Paje beach, and couples are a good part of our year. For them we built the Tree House, a two-storey house for two adults only. If you are also thinking of marrying here, start with our weddings page. What follows is what we tell couples who write to us before they book.
When to come: between the rains
Tanzania has two rainy seasons: the long rains, the masika, from mid-March to the end of May, and the short rains, the vuli, from mid-October to early December (UNDP country brief). That leaves two stretches of the year that work for a honeymoon: June to early October, and mid-December to early March.
This year comes with a warning. The Tanzania Meteorological Authority expects a very strong El Niño to shape the 2026 short rains, including on Unguja, the main island of Zanzibar, with rainfall expected to intensify in November and to continue into January 2027 (The Chanzo). If your dates are flexible, February looks the safer bet: after those rains, before the long rains of mid-March.
February has one more thing to weigh. Ramadan in 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February, with Eid al-Fitr around 9 or 10 March, subject to the sighting of the moon (The National). Hotels and restaurants keep serving, but the island slows down by day, and outside them you should not eat or drink in public. For some couples it is a beautiful time to see Zanzibar; for others it is a reason to come in January.
On the east coast, the tide sets the day
Paje faces a reef lagoon that fills and empties twice a day. At the spring tides, around the new and the full moon, the water goes a long way out and the beach becomes a walk across sand and seaweed farms; at the neaps it hardly moves. A couple who wants to swim at any hour should know this before booking; a couple who likes to walk out together at low water will love it.
From our own predictions for February 2027, the month we would pick:
- 7–10 February: spring tides, with low water between 10:57 am and 12:11 pm.
- 14 February: a softer tide, easing towards the neaps of the 15th–17th. Low water at 2:08 pm and high water at 8:46 pm, so Valentine's Day is a day for the pool and a dinner, not for the flats.
- 20–25 February: among the biggest spring tides of the season, with low water from 10:05 am to 12:42 pm. On the 22nd and 23rd the lagoon empties further than on any day between November and March, and by early evening it is full again, right up to the beach.
The table is our own prediction from the EOT20 ocean tide model (Hart-Davis et al., 2021), calibrated against the Zanzibar tide gauge, in local time: allow 15 minutes either way. Any date is in our Paje tide calendar, and our guide to Paje through the tide turns it into a plan for every kind of day.
The house for two
The Tree House is a bamboo-and-timber A-frame of 70 m² over two floors, with a king bed, a rooftop terrace and a private bathroom outdoors, among the greenery. It takes two adults and no children. If you would rather be on the ground, the Poolside Villa is 45 m², a few steps from the shared pool, with a private terrace and an outdoor bathroom, fully private, with a bathtub.
Tell reception that it is your honeymoon and we decorate your villa at no charge; the same goes for anniversaries. Reception also arranges a romantic dinner on the beach, and a cake if you want one. The spa is open from 9 am to 6 pm, with a four-hands massage and hot stones among its treatments, booked at reception. The kitchen at the NEA restaurant serves until 10 pm, with vegetarian dishes every day.
One honest note. The Nest is not a silent resort: there is life on the beach and around the pool. You can ask for a quieter villa, and we try, but we do not promise silence.
Your honeymoon days, set before you land.
Pick the trips, send us your dates, and we fit each one around the tide — one request, one quote, nothing charged here.
Beach and safari in one trip
A safari on the mainland pairs well with Zanzibar, and we would put the safari first and keep the beach for the end. From the hotel, a fly-in day in Mikumi National Park leaves at 5 am and is back at The Nest by 5:30 pm; for more time with the animals, the fly-in itineraries run from two to five days through Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. All of them are in our experiences catalogue, on request.
On the island itself, keep at least one day for a day in old Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000 (UNESCO), and one at sea: Prison Island and the Nakupenda sandbank make a full day, with the giant tortoises first and then a strip of white sand in the open sea.
What a couple should know before flying
- Behaviour in public: Zanzibar is conservative, and the UK Foreign Office asks visitors to respect local customs so as not to cause offence. Inside the hotel you are at home; in the village and in Stone Town, keep affection for later.
- Dress: away from the resorts, and above all in Stone Town, shorts and sleeveless tops may cause offence. Cover shoulders and knees.
- Same-sex couples: same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Tanzania, including Zanzibar, and the Foreign Office warns that same-sex couples who hold hands or kiss in public could be arrested (FCDO). We would rather you read it here than find out on arrival.
- Visa and insurance: you need a visa, and the e-visa is applied for before travelling. Every visitor also needs the Government's inbound travel insurance, even with a personal policy; if you land in Zanzibar first, it comes from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (FCDO entry requirements).
In short: yes, Zanzibar is a very good honeymoon if you come between the rains, check the tide for the beach you choose and respect the island's customs on behaviour and dress. For the 2026–27 season we would pick February: it falls after the short rains, which this year's forecast runs into January, and before the long rains; it has the lowest daytime tide of the season; and Ramadan begins around the 8th.
